At some point today (and everyday!) take a Chill Break

In your learning journal, tell me which chill break you did. Did you find it helpful?

Math
Using the graph you found on Tuesday, please answer the following questions.
What is the purpose of this graph?
What does the person who created this graph want you to know or think?
Did the person who created this graph use any techniques to mislead the reader/audience?

Other things on the go:
- The Giver/Gathering Blue - up to Chapter 13
- upcycling
- send me a picture for the field guide class photo/collage

Tuesday, 28 April 2020

The Giver/Gathering Blue
Please read chapters 11 - 13.
The Giver - Jonas is becoming frustrated. Why?
Gathering Blue - Kira is starting to question or be wary of Jamison. Why?

Field Guide
I am starting to think about finishing touches of the field guide (the cover etc.). I was going to put a class picture in but since I can't take one now, I'd like to make a collage of photos. Can you email me a picture of yourself? Maybe beside a tree or out in your yard? Try to make it mainly your head because each picture will be pretty small.

Upcycling project
As I said earlier this week, I am challenging you to "upcycle" something from your home.
Please write in your learning journal what you upcycled - take a picture if you can!
Upcycling is taking something that was headed to garbage or recycling and making it into a new useful item. This might take you a few days - that's ok! Here are some examples to inspire you;

The upcycling club from my last school made birdhouses from VHS tapes.
If you don't know what VHS tapes are - they are what we watched movies on in the olden days.

Bird feeders from plastic bottles:

Toilet paper roll plant starters:

Monday, 27 April 2020

April 28th is International Pay it Forward Day.

How will you start a ripple of kindness?
In your learning journal, tell me about the acts of kindness you will do today. Will they be for your family? Your community? For the earth? All of the above?

Math
Please find a graph from an online news source.
Copy and paste the graph in your learning journal and copy and paste the web address that the graph came from.

Sunday, 26 April 2020

Let's start the week with our check in.
In your learning journal please let me know:
How are you feeling?
a) Awesome!
b) I'm doing pretty ok
c) Just meh
d) I'm struggling
e) I'm not at all ok and I would like a personal check-in with you Mrs. Nye.
 Please explain your above answer.

Last Monday you set out a plan for yourself using some sentence starters that I gave you. Go back and read that plan. In your learning journal, tell me how you did. Did you stick to your plan?

The Giver/Gathering Blue
Please read chapter 10.
Remember, at the end of this book you will be writing an essay comparing the community where the book takes place and the community where you live. In preparation for that essay please write one paragraph making one comparison. Perhaps choose a way that they are alike, or choose one way that they are different. Use quotes from the book to support your answer.

This weekend we made toad houses in our backyards with some clay pots I found in our garage. Toads are great friends to have around in the yard. They eat many insects that aren't great for the garden. I put a post on how to make a "Toad Abode" on the We The Kind website. Later this week I will be challenging you to "upcycle" something from around your house. Upcycling is creating a new and useful item out of something that was going to be thrown out or recycled. Start looking around your house and thinking about what you might want to make.

Earth Day 14 Day Climate Lockdown Challenge
Yesterday was day two for me. No food waste.
I did a few things for this challenge. We were going to do some grocery shopping today but, with this challenge in mind, we decided that we have enough food and that we should use what we have before buying new food. For supper, we had big bowls of salad that used up a bunch of fresh veggies that were headed to the compost bin if we hadn't eaten them soon. I am also looking into buying a vermicomposter for our kitchen.

Math and Literacy
Today is a catch- up day. No new assignments.

Field Guide
I have been working hard on formatting and entering your content into the field guide. I am going to be ready to send it to print in the next week or so. Some of you have not yet shared your pages with me. It would be really awesome if every person in our class had a part in the book. Please, please, please - if you haven't already - send me your field guide pages.

Your Friday Fun Song!
Today I chose the song Shiny Happy People by the band REM.
This is a song from when I was a teenager - yes they had music and videos way back then too!
It has always made me smile and have fun and dance. Enjoy! Have a dance party at home!
Perhaps it will be more inspiration for your dance project.

They did a version on Sesame Street - it is awesome!
Bonus marks if you can spot the band member that they replaced with a puppet.

Wednesday, 22 April 2020

Let's start today with a quick vision check:

Earth Day 14 Day Climate Lockdown Challenge
I know of at least one person in our class who is doing the full 14 day challenge with me. Awesome!!!
Day one - Watch an Eco-related film.
I watched two; Three Seconds and Mr. Garbage.
I didn't know it before I watched it but three seconds was by Prince EA. You all know I think he is great and this film did not disappoint. I also really enjoyed Mr. Garbage. It showed me that one person can make a big difference. We all need to remember that.

Literacy
Continue to work on your Now/Then response to your climate conversation. Anchal asked a great question yesterday. How do you submit this? Take a picture of your work and put it in your learning journal. If this is a challenge - please let me know.

The Giver/Gathering Blue
Please read Chapter 9.
The Giver - Describe how Jonas' life is changing.
Gathering Blue - Why does Thomas offer to write down the names of the plants for Kira?

Math
Create a graph using the following data.
You choose the graph type.
You could either draw it on paper and take a picture or create it on computer. Please put it in your learning journal. I will be looking for the graph to be fully labelled.

Tuesday, 21 April 2020

I have two Earth Day challenges for you:
1. Climate Conversation.  We started this challenge yesterday. Once you have your questions, it's time for conversation! Go ahead and have a discussion with the older person that you chose. Be sure to include the questions that you brainstormed. Take notes on what the either the weather, food or transportation (only one!) were like in the past and compare that to now. Your comparison can be in many forms; as a t-chart (then/now), as a then/now drawing, as a graphic of some sort - be creative! How have the changes in our society impacted climate change and/or the environment? I expect that this will take you a few days - it is not due tomorrow. - aim for Friday.

2. In honour of Earth Day I will be starting the Bye Bye Plastic Bag 14 Day Lockdown Climate Challenge. It is posted on the new We The Kind website. I propose that you take on this challenge with me. Now you don't have to do the full fourteen days. Maybe you can try one or two of the challenges or maybe you are going to commit to eco-hero status and go for all fourteen. It's up to you. Let me know in your learning journal what you decide to give a try. For the next two weeks, I'll keep you up to date on how I'm doing.

Intermediate Music and Dance Challenge #2

I received many questions about what dance has to do with music. Well where do I begin...
The simple and straight forward answer is that music and dance are intricately connected in many ways. Dance is one way to physically respond to music. Besides - for those of you who are concerned with marks - its for marks. I will be working with your phys ed teachers to give you a dance mark this year.

Music Online Challenge #2  - Due Friday May 8th
Go to the Chrome Music Lab:
Music Lab
Take some time to explore and try out the "Songmaker" section.
Using Songmaker, create an original composition. Make sure you use the "save" option in the bottom right hand corner to get a link to your composition. Once you have finished the composition - please email the link to me - michelle.nye@gapps.yrdsb.ca
Success criteria:
- my composition has an original melody
- I have included a rhythm section (it is underneath the melody line grid)
- I added in harmony at least three times

Dance Online Challenge #2 - Due Friday May 1st
Anyone can dance just about anywhere!
Watch these two videos:
Happy
Can't Stop the Feeling
Make a short (max 30 secs) video of yourself dancing. You might be in your kitchen or your backyard - anywhere! Show me how you can move your body to music and have fun!
If making a video is a huge challenge for you - no problem. Take a series of five pictures of yourself each one depicting a different dance move.
Email your project to me - michelle.nye@gapps.yrdsb.ca
Success criteria:
- have fun!
- use a variety of your body parts to create dance moves
- at least two levels (ie stretched up tall vs. close to the ground)

Monday, 20 April 2020

I'm starting a birding course this week and so I am really looking out for birds in my neighbourhood.  I noticed a gorgeous bird up high on a street light - so I took a picture for the observations from isolation project.

Then its little friend caught my eye.
Is that cute or what?

Literacy
Its almost Earth Day!
I have an Earth Day assignment for you that requires a little preparation.

Your Earth Day assignment will be to have a conversation with an elderly person around the topic of climate change. Draw a Then and Now picture based on their climate conversation, demonstrating the difference between the past and current ways of living and how that impacts climate change. Demonstrate a positive action for the environment. You will work on this whole assignment over the next few days - it should not be completed today.

Today I would like you to:
1. Choose one topic for your climate conversation - weather, food or transportation.
2. In your learning journal - brainstorm a list of questions specific to your topic.
Examples : Weather - How have the seasons change in your lifetime? Food - Did you eat differently before? Has the way you eat changed? Transportation - How has the way people move around changed?
3. Figure out who you will interview. This person should be much older than you - you grandparent's age. They could be in your family or another member of your community. Ask your parents for help if you need to. The interview could be done many different ways: on the phone, by email, online etc..

Literacy - Book Study
Please read chapter 8 of The Giver or Gathering Blue. Please remember that you will be writing an essay comparing the community in your book and the community you live in.

Math
Continue working on yesterday's assignment.

Remember - you are awesome!
Virtual high five!

Sunday, 19 April 2020

Let's start the week with our check in.
In your learning journal please let me know:
How are you feeling?
a) Awesome!
b) I'm doing pretty ok
c) Just meh
d) I'm struggling
e) I'm not at all ok and I would like a personal check-in with you Mrs. Nye.
 Please explain your above answer.

Check out the brand new Moraine Hills - We The Kind website!
We The Kind
It gives you a whole bunch of ways to keep up the Moraine Hills kindness even though we aren't together in our school building and there are some special messages from the staff!

Literacy
In your learning journal please complete the statements below.
I'll be looking for you to fill out your answers with details and descriptive language.

Math
I would like you to please read the following blog post on misleading graphs.
https://venngage.com/blog/misleading-graphs/
Please list and explain the 5 ways you can manipulate data in this article.
This is a pretty long article - so it is both today's and tomorrow's math assignment.

It's Earth Week! - Here are some suggestions to get you going:

  • Observations from Isolation is an iNaturalist project I have joined. (I'm 13th on the list!) It is a great way to remember that nature is close by - just look out the window!
  • Here is a supersweet look at the brand new Barred Owl Owlets
  • Take a look at the climate lockdown challenge from byebyeplasticbags.org - its on the brand new We the Kind website (see above). Look under the Be Kind to the Environment tab and try one of the challenges!

Thursday, 16 April 2020

Happy Friday everyone!
Another week well done!

Math
For math today I'd like you to watch this video:

Literacy
Please read chapters 5-7 of either The Giver or Gathering Blue.

Music
Please remember - your analysis assignment is due Monday.
See blog post - April 7th

As is my new custom, I'll finish the week with a song for you.
Walk down the sidewalk this weekend (or in your backyard) - and dance!
Have a wonderful weekend!

Wednesday, 15 April 2020

I just wanted to start with that today. Remember it - it is true.

We are over a week into our distance learning and I am wondering - how is it going?
I don't really have a sense of how much time you are spending on school work.
The guidelines from the board are that you should be doing between eight and ten hours of school work a week - that's for all subjects. In your learning journal, please tell me  - Is this about what you are doing? Are you finding it is more than that? or not enough? Please be honest.

Reminders!
- Please check your google classrooms for art, history/geography, science and French!
- Mr. Hussey is available to help ELL students. You can email him at gareth.hussey@yrdsb.ca

The Barred Owlets have hatched!
They are so sweet - you should check out the nest cams.

Literacy
The Giver/Gathering Blue - Chapter 4 - remember to use evidence from the text (quotes) to support your ideas.

The Giver - Talk about "release". What does it mean to be released?  How did Roberto look when he walked through the door of the Releasing Room?

Gathering Blue - How was Kira feeling at the end of the chapter? How would you be feeling if you were in her place?

Math
Using yesterday's graphs:
1. If you were a hamburger company, which graph would you use to try to convince stores to buy your hamburgers to sell at their store? Explain.
2. What if you were a hot dog company? Which graph would you use? Explain.

Tuesday, 14 April 2020

Hello amazing people!!
I started a new routine for myself this morning. I am getting up earlier and going for a walk first thing in the morning before I start work. I heard so many birds! It was amazing.
What beautiful things are you noticing in the world around you?

Math
These two graphs display the same information.
Compare the two graphs. Is one of them misleading? How?

Literacy
Writing. We are going to continue to work on creative writing from another point of view or perspective. Last time you wrote from a bird's point of view. Still using the bird cameras as a setting,  I would like you to try a perspective other than the bird. You could be a nest, a tree, a bird feeder, an egg, or many other things - be creative. I will be looking for point of view n your writing. I will also be looking for you to add in some emotions - how does the nest or tree etc... feel?

Music
I had some great questions about the music assignment. I thought I would answer them on the blog so everyone can see the answers. There is some confusion about the elements of music - timbre, texture and beat in particular:
The texture is how thin or thick the music is . Really thin music has only line of music played by one instrument. Thick music has many things going on at once with lots of instruments.
Timbre is the sound colours the different instruments make. The composer might choose to write for flute because they want the music to sound bright and shrill. Or they may write music for the trombone because they want it to sound brassy and low.
Beat is the pulse of the music. You know when I count the band in - "one, two, ready, go" That's the beat. It can be fast, slow, strong, steady etc...

Here is a sample analysis of a song:

This beat of this piece is really hard to find. It is not strong and it is also doesn't feel steady. I have a hard time tapping my foot to it.
The music doesn't seem really fast, it sounds like andante - a walking pace.
The aren't big changes in dynamics and the music sounds in the louder range between a mezzo forte and forte.
There are some crescendos and decrescendos to make the dynamics interesting and come alive.
There is only one line of music so the texture is thin. At times there are double stops to add a bit of texture.
Cello is the only instrument making the timbre dark and mellow.

Monday, 13 April 2020

Welcome back!
I hope you all had a wonderful and restful long weekend.
Reminder - my office hours are 10:00 - 11:30.

After each weekend - I will be doing a check in with you as I did last Monday.
It will always be the same question, but I expect your answer will change.
Please make an entry in your learning journal answering the following question:
How are you feeling?
a) Awesome!
b) I'm doing pretty ok
c) Just meh
d) I'm struggling
e) I'm not at all ok and I would like a check-in with you Mrs. Nye.
 Please explain your above answer.

Math
We are going to start to explore how we can use and manipulate graphs and data to tell the story we want it to tell. How we can display data so that it is biased towards what we want it to say. With that in mind, take a look at this cartoon and tell me what it is about:

Literacy
Please read chapter three of either the Giver OR Gathering Blue. Reminder - you should only be reading one of these books - not both. Gathering Blue is an option only for those of you who have read The Giver before.
Also please remember that at the end of this novel study you will be writing a five paragraph essay comparing the community that the book takes place in and the community that you live in. Please take notes as you are reading the story. Your essay will need quotes from the book to support your ideas.

Chapter 3 questions - to be answered in your learning journal
The Giver - How is the role of birthmother viewed in this society? Talk about what happens to them and how they are treated.
Gathering Blue - What choice was Kira given at her trial? What did she choose? Do you agree with that choice? Why or why not?

Google Chat
A few of you have let me know that you are having trouble with google chat. I'm not sure why there are troubles, but I'll give some possible answers to your problems. I'll be on the chat during my office hours - try it out and let me know if you are still having problems.

1. Open your Google Drive
2. Look in the top right corner - you'll see nine dots in a little square.
It looks like this:
3. Click on the nine little dots.
4. You should see "Chat" once you click on the nine dots.
It looks like this:

If you do not see it - scroll down and/or click on the "more" option.
Once you are in chat, on the left side there is a search option. Search for "Mrs. Nye's Class Chat Room". You are all members - I double checked.
Try it out and let me know how it goes.

Thursday, 9 April 2020

Hello wonderful people!
This is just a reminder that Friday and Monday are holidays and I will not be posting new work.
Use this weekend to rest and catch up on some work if you want. I will be checking my email from time to time over the weekend - if you need me for anything please let me know.

I opened a class chat room on google chat - please don't goof around and abuse it. I want to keep it going so we can try to talk to each other a bit. I miss our class discussion! I will start a new thread each day and I will be on the chat during my office hours. You will find the invitation in your gapps email. You can also access it if you go into your google suite (the nine dots in a square in the top right corner of your google drive) you'll see the icon for "Chat". The room is called "Mrs. Nye's Class Chat Room." Please let me know if you have any problems. Thanks to Ellen for testing it out for me!

I'll finish with a song for you. I'm thinking of you. Have a great weekend!

Wednesday, 8 April 2020

We're all in this together! Keep movin' don't stop.
Great advice!
This is Sam Roberts (awesome Canadian musician) at home with his kids - like we all are!
They recorded his song We're All In This Together.
So great! My son and I have been working on the song Three Little Birds on Ukulele and Guitar. I am also knitting a pair of mittens. Tell me what projects you have been working on to keep yourself busy at home.

For whatever reason - my email keeps cutting out on me during my office hours. Next week I am going to set up a google chat during my office hours so you can ask questions and get answers in real time. Plus I can hopefully hear how you are doing!

Math
The three graphs from yesterday's post are displaying data for the sales of chocolate milk at a school cafeteria. You and a group of students have proposed to the cafeteria manager that there should be a day when chocolate milk is 50% off - half price.
According to the data, which day should that be? Why?
You can only use one graph in your presentation to the manager.Which graph would you use to convince the manager of your idea and why?

Novel Study - The Giver/Gathering Blue
At the end of this novel study you will be writing a five paragraph essay comparing the community that the book takes place in and the community that you live in. As you are reading, please keep notes with this in mind. In the essay I will be looking for quotes from the book to support your ideas. I suggest either keeping notes on paper at home or opening a separate google document to keep notes in. If you have any questions about this - please ask!

Please read Chapter 2 and answer the following question for your book:
The Giver - If some older people in your community were to observe you, what job do you think they'd give you and why?
Gathering Blue - How were children treated in the village?  Give examples to support your points.

Tuesday, 7 April 2020

What beautiful weather we have had this week! It feels like spring! After school, I went out to clean up the garden with my kids. Here are some signs of new life that I noticed.:

Look outside, or even better- step outside, and find a sign of new life. Tell  me about it in your learning journal - if you can, take a picture and share it with me.

There may be times when I am on your learning journal document at the same time as you - don't be afraid to chat with me. I'd like to stay connected with you!

Math
The three graphs below all show the same information. In your learning journal, talk about the strengths and weaknesses of each graph type.

Literacy
Reading - we will take a day off from The Giver/Gathering Blue. I want to give everyone a chance to catch up. Please make sure you have read chapter one.
Rehan asked me to put the link to the book so it is more easily accessible. If you look on the right side of the blog under "important links" I have put the links there. Thank for the suggestion Rehan!

Writing -  Focus: point of view.
Last week, I posted a link to the Bird Cams. Here is is again:
Bird Cameras
Right now the Barred Owl and the Red-tailed Hawk are sitting on eggs, and the Petrels and the Albatross have babies in the nests! You can watch the birds live and you can also watch past footage if you scroll down. I would like you to choose one bird to watch for a while. Using that bird's point of view, write a diary entry. If that bird wrote in a diary, what would it write today? Be creative! I'm looking for your writing to be from the bird's point of view. Example - "This morning I was siting on my eggs when all of a sudden..." Please put your diary entry in your learning journal.

Music
As you may have noticed, I posted an intermediate music assignment to the blog. Please check the assignment and when you have time, you can work on it. I will only be posting one music assignment every two weeks.

Art
Reminder to check your art google classroom. You have an assignment there that you can be working on. Thanks to Brandon for letting me know!

Hello Beautiful People!
Remember the calendars that I was putting up in our room each month?
Here is April's calendar:

Yesterday's suggestion was "Contact a neighbour or friend and offer to help them"
Today's is "Share what you are feeling and be willing to ask for help".
In your learning journal, write a short paragraph about giving and asking for help. Why is this particularly important right now?

A note about your Learning Journals. Please don't erase or "resolve" the comments I make, please leave them on the document. You can respond to them if I ask you a question, but don't resolve it.

Math
There were some great ideas about the graphs I posted yesterday. Interestingly, about 95% of you connected your graph analysis to the Coronavirus. I can tell what is top of mind for everyone! Today, a graph with a bit more information. Based on the graph below please answer the following questions in your learning journal.
a) What is the label for the X-axis?
b) What is the label for the Y- axis?
c) What is this graph about?
d) What can you tell me about the person who created this graph?

Literacy
A couple of you have let me know that you have already read and studied The Giver. If you have already read The Giver, you can study the companion novel Gathering Blue. Please - only read Gathering Blue if you have already read The Giver.

Gathering Blue

For both The Giver and Gathering Blue:
Please read the first chapter. Both of these books take place in communities very different from the one we live in. In your learning journal, tell me what information you learn about the community that your book is set in. What questions do you have about the community?

French
Please remember to check you google classroom for French. Mme. Carnovale will be adding to it every day.

A message from Ms. Angastiniotis, our librarian:
Welcome back Moraine Hills!  It is so exciting to have you back and connecting with you on a different platform.  Using this site will allow you to sign out books, research information, listen to a story and participate in some creative activities. Click here https://sites.google.com/gapps.yrdsb.ca/llc-at-mhps. Looking forward to hearing from you!"

Sunday, 5 April 2020

Happy Monday!
Day one of learning together - differently.

If you have not yet set up your learning journal, please read Friday's blog post and do so.

1. In your learning journal please answer the following question:
How are you feeling?
a) Awesome!
b) I'm doing pretty ok
c) Just meh
d) I'm struggling
e) I'm not at all ok and I would like a check-in with you Mrs. Nye.
 Please explain your above answer.

2. Math
We are going to be working on data management for the next little while. We start by looking at graphs. Every graph tells a story. Below is are two unlabeled graphs. Choose one and answer the following questions in your learning journal. What could this graph be about? What story is it telling?

3. Literacy
You guys know I LOVE reading to you and I'm am really missing our journeys through stories together. We are going to read a book together - it will just be a bit different. The book is called The Giver. Here is a link to the the book:

The Giver

For today - I would like you to make sure you can access the book and make sure you can navigate the book online. In your learning journal, please let me know if you can get onto the book online or if you are having trouble.

English Language Learner Support
If anyone would like ELL support or help - Mr. Hussey is available from 8:30 - 10:30 each day.
You can email him at Gareth.Hussey@yrdsb.ca

Remember! I want to do everything I can to help you. I am available Monday - Friday from 10:00 - 11:30. Send me an email and I will answer right away (unless I'm helping someone else at the time). If you want to talk on the phone - just send me an email with a phone number I can reach you at and I'll give you a call.
