Our Joy Projects continue to spread Joy through the Moraine Hills Community! I'm so proud!

Math

Today we looked a some scatterplots and talked about how you can display data in a misleading way - or a way that suits your purpose. Consider this as you continue to work on the data for your Green New Deal.

Reminder - You history is due Monday. Please make sure you compare and contrast, and use quotes from other sources to support your ideas.

When we were out in the forest Catherine noticed this in ice. It is a shockingly similar silhouette to the one used regularly in Stamped (just looking the other way). Amazing...

 Green New Deal

Today we talked further on ways we can display our data for this project. Consider doing an infographic as a step away from (or as part of ) the traditional bar and line graphs we have done for many years.

Saigeon Trail Self Guided Tour

Today we began to create a website together! We are collaborating to create a self-guided tour of the trail system behind the school.

Here is the website https://sites.google.com/view/saigeon-trail-self-guided-tour

Plan what you want to include as the content for your page on the site.

Today we began an new project called "Hair Today"
We are examining "gaze" as an element of art. Who is doing the looking? Who/what is being looked at? What is revealed?(or not)
Looking at the work of artist Lorna Simpson we are creating self portraits of ourselves - but from the back. What will you direct the viewer to look at. What do you reveal or force into gaze?

 Math

Today we started building our data vocabulary. Please make sure you have a vocabulary list - with definitions - that includes; categorical, numerical, nominal, ordinal, discrete, continuous.

Green New Deal

Also connected to math - we are at the data collection stage of this project. We spent a great deal of time over the last two days generating ideas on what data we can look for in our Green New Deal project. Now we need to actively search for data connected to the systems and subsystems we are focusing on. This is not an easy task - you will be compiling data and information from several resources.

Example: if you are looking at a sports team and the transportation subsystem.

Stamped

We are approaching some major figures on both the Canada side and the United States side. Abraham Lincoln and John A. Macdonald. What can you tell me about these two men?

Friday, 20 November 2020

Please remember to bring a lock on Monday so we can begin our locker pilot program. Remember- you cannot have a locker unless you have a lock.

Your "money over morals" is due Monday. (see yesterday's blog post)

Have a great weekend!

Green New Deal

Now that we have taken a good look at Milky Chance as a case study, we are ready to really dig into our own green new deal. You can begin creating your system diagram and begin your research for raw data.

Stamped

"Money over morals." we have talked about this quite a bit. Please explain what we mean by money over morals giving concrete examples from history and also from the present (both Canada and the US). This is due Monday.

 Reminders!

  • Green New Deal (Milky Chance Blog Post) mini-presentations are tomorrow. Please practice. I am marking not only the information that you share but also how you share it. Clarity of voice and eye contact.
  • Math probability games are due Friday. Please go over the assignment sheet and rubric (on Monday's blog post) to make sure you are completing the requirements.
We spent some time talking about perseverance. We worked on an activity that tested our perseverance. Talk to your family at home about it. Have you persevered with your Joy Project? Have you seen it through to completion?

Stamped
We are learning about how the United States of America was founded on many contradictions to say the least. Canada, we will soon find out, wasn't much better.

Bird Feeders Club
Great success today - a cardinal came close - but remained shy. A new challenge!

What made this? Beautiful... yet destructive.

Math

Continuing to work on our probability games.

My Green New Deal

The band Milky Chance is a perfect case study or example of what we are doing with our Green New Deal assignment. They love making music and touring but they recognize that what they are doing has huge environmental impacts. They hired a sustainability manager to examine their 'system' and they are devising ways to continue to do what they are doing but lessen their environmental impact. We started building a system model for the band.

The band has created a website to share with others how they are working towards their goals:

https://www.milkychange.com/

Today's assignment: choose a blog post from MilkyChange and answer the following questions:

1. What environmental issue is your blog post addressing?

2. What subsystem of the band's system are they modifying to address this issue?

3. How is this contributing to their mission?

4. What makes this an effective blog post (or not)?

These questions will be answered in a short oral presentation on Thursday. There is no need to hand anything in. I'll be assessing the information you deliver orally. Practice your presentation so you are not just reading from a paper or screen. I'll be looking for speaking clearly and eye contact with the audience.

Stamped

We have entered into a new section: 1728 - 1826.

What is the difference between an Assimilationist and an Antiracist?

Monday, 16 November 2020

Today we (or really just me because not many of you were talking) had a serious discussion around the type of behaviour I expect from you. Particularly in the way you treat each other. Many of you committed to making some changes - not creating negativity and not giving power to negativity. I look forward to seeing the caring, kind and joyful people I know you all can be.

Graduation Hoodie Designs

Please make sure you talk to Ms. K if you are interested in submitting a design for this year's graduation hoodie. The deadline for submissions is next Monday. We will vote on a design after that.

Math

I introduced the probability summative assignment today. Our probability fair will be on Thursday and Friday of this week.

This is a link to the assignment and rubric

History

Please make sure to take advantage of the opportunity to revise your answer to the history question on Thursday's blog post. I'm looking for specific examples of how the written word has been given power in the past and how it continues to hold power.

Thursday, 12 November 2020

 Math

Today we played "Hit 100" . Explain to your family at home how this works and perhaps play a round or two!

Art

You 3D Origami is due Monday. I'm looking forward to seeing your amazing sculptures!

History

Continuing to build our timeline/graffiti wall. Please answer the following question for Monday:

Jason Reynolds has given Zurara the title "World's First Racist". In doing so, Reynolds spotlights the power of the written word and how it can be used as a force for evil. What is History? How is History much more than simply a recording of dates and facts that are significant only to the past?

Science

Over the last couple of days we have been looking at the original document for the Green New Deal. How can you apply these ideas to your Green New Deal project?

Leadership Literacy

  1. Please write out a full set of instructions (including a diagram) that would explain our locker plan to other teachers. This is also due Monday.
  2. Make sure your are on track with your Joy Project. What are your next steps?

Wednesday, 11 November 2020

 Math

Please complete the following question to be handed in tomorrow.

Remembrance Day

Many thanks to all of the classes who contributed to our virtual remembrance day assembly. Thank you to our class for showing consideration and respect as we recognized this important day.

History

We have been tracking the events that lead up to slavery in North America. Our graffiti wall/timeline is filling in on the US side. Please spend some time researching what was going on in Canada (or what would become Canada) between 1400 and 1700.

 Parent/Teacher Interviews!

This year because of the Covid restrictions, we cannot have the interviews in person. I will be conducting my interviews using Google Meet. Please help your families sign into Google Meet through your YRDSB Gapps account. In the interest of privacy, I will set up a separate meet for each interview. The meet code will be my last name and your time of interview.

For example, if your interview is at 3:15 your Google Meet code will be Nye315.

If I am not in the meeting when you sign in- please be patient, I may be running a minute or two late.

Also please understand that I have quite a few back-to-back meetings and I will need to limit the interviews to 15 minutes.

Amazing leadership!

Today we came up with a plan to safely re-open our lockers for use. We presented our plan to Mrs. Snow and we have approval to be the pilot class to test out if we can safely re-open the lockers. This is awesome - but also comes with great responsibility. I know we can rise to the challenge!

I love our natural remembrance day wreath.

Thank you so much to Masih and Wilbur for creating the wreath and to Michael for creating our scroll.

Joy Project

I am getting so many positive comments about the joy projects that are happening - both from teachers and students! So proud! We are spreading joy around this community. Make sure you persevere and see your project through to completion.

Rate and ratio checkpoint was returned today.

We discussed the vocabulary that we will be expected to use throughout this study of probability. Words such as certain, impossible, likely, probable, unlikely, improbable, uncertain, unsure, favourable outcomes, possible outcomes, experimental and theoretical should become part of all of your solutions as we move though this unit.

Please answer the following questions:

Brit goes out for lunch to the local submarine sandwich shop.

He can choose white or whole wheat bread, and a filling of turkey, ham,

veggies, roast beef, or salami.

Use a tree diagram to show all Brit’s possible sandwich choices.

a)How many sub choices are there?

b)He may also choose a single topping of tomatoes, cheese, or lettuce.

Now, how many possible sub choices does he have?

c)If each possibility has an equal chance of selection, what is the probability that

Brit will choose a whole wheat turkey sub topped with tomatoes?

d)What is the probability of choosing a veggie sub topped with cheese?

e)What is the probability of choosing a meat sub topped with lettuce on white bread?

f) What is the probability of choosing a meat sub topped with lettuce?
