Math

Please put more work into the packing circles problem. Remember SPEED IS NOT IMPORTANT! Things that are learned deeply and not learned fast.

Joy

Today we talked about acceptance as a big contributor to joy and mental well-being.

“Why be unhappy about something if it can be remedied?

And what is the use of being unhappy if it cannot be remedied?”

~ Shantideva  (Buddhist scholar)

“Acceptance, it must be pointed out, is the opposite of resignation and defeat …

We cannot succeed by denying what exists. The acceptance of reality is the only place

from which change can begin.” ~ Book of Joy pg 224

Speech from the Throne

In advance of the Speech from the Throne, we decided as a class what we thought should be the priorities of the upcoming term of government. Then we tried to watch the speech to see if the government's priorities lined up with ours, but they were very behind schedule. I will bring a summary tomorrow and we will compare.

Here we are planning for the government:

Here are our priorities for the government:

Joy

We examined humility as a pillar of joy today. Talk to your family at home about humility.

“Humility allows us to celebrate the gifts of others, but that does not mean you have to dent your own gifts or shrink from using them.” ~ Archbishop Desmond Tutu

Identity/Miles Morales

  • What do the experiences of Miles and the bear have in common? How are they different?
  • Identify a time when you have been labeled by others. How did it feel? How did you respond?
  • Identify a time when you labeled someone else. Why did you do it?
  • Why do you think we are quick to place labels on each other?

Math
Today we talked about how we learn more when we struggle with something. We looked at the "Squares, Squares and More Squares" problem. Please complete the questions on this sheet for Monday.

Joy!

Our study in the eight pillars of Joy began today with a discussion in perspective. We talked about how our problems and struggles are important, and there is also a bigger picture to consider. That the problem may only one part of it of the bigger picture. To better understand this, we worked together on Zoom (not the online meeting platform - the book). Tell your family at home about Zoom.

Today we talked about preparing our minds to foster joy for ourselves. We need to have a growth mindset. We worked on how we would help Charlie Brown turn around his fixed mindset - how we can turn around our own fixed mindset.

As part of our Social Emotional Learning and focus on our mental well-being we began our study of "Joy". Be ready to read your intention statement for tomorrow first thing tomorrow morning.

Lessons from today:

Clear your mind and breathe.

Set yourself up for a good day with good intentions.

Miles Morales
We read chapter two today. Please continue to create your identity chart for Miles and yourself. What makes up someone's identity? What are the factors that contribute to your identity?

A great second day! Thank you everyone!

Pleas return the "letter to parents" from the first day of school once your parents have filled it out.

Continue to think about the necklace problem. Start to think in generalities or a general rule - what if you had 99 beads? 100 beads?
